Assessing the Impact of Local Sports Infrastructure on Youth Development in Pakistan: A Cross-Sectional Study

Project Brief:

This project investigates the relationship between access to local sports infrastructure and important youth development outcomes in Pakistan, such as academic performance, physical health, psychological well-being, and the risk of substance misuse. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study will survey 1,032 young people aged 18–24 from both urban and rural communities in Karachi and Hyderabad. Participants will be divided into two groups based on the availability of structured sports spaces within a five-mile radius of their residence. In addition to quantitative surveys, in-depth interviews and focus group discussions will be conducted with youth, parents, and policymakers to explore perceived barriers, motivators, and the socio-cultural dynamics surrounding sports participation. This project addresses a critical evidence gap by focusing not only on the benefits of sports participation but also on the necessary conditions—particularly physical access to sports facilities—that enable such participation. The findings have direct implications for planning and investment in youth-centered infrastructure in underserved areas.

Public Policy Relevance:

From a public policy perspective, the findings are highly relevant to the ministries of Health, Education, and Planning. Insights from this research will guide policymakers in developing targeted interventions to improve youth well-being through enhanced access to sports. The study will support the design of locally adaptable, cost-effective strategies that promote mental health, academic engagement, and community inclusion, particularly for youth in resource-poor settings. Additionally, it aligns with Pakistan’s commitments under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). By integrating youth voices and stakeholder perspectives, the project will generate actionable policy recommendations, fostering collaboration between local governments, community organizations, and the private sector to create inclusive, equitable environments for youth development.
